Is Theism Compatible with the Existence of Evil?
- The Problem:
- God exists -
- Omnipotent
- Omniscient
- Omnibenevlolent
- Evil exists -
- Natural
- Moral
- If A and B are true, then either
- God cannot prevent evil, or
- God doesn't know about evil, or
- God doesn't care about evil
- Possible Solutions:
- Denial -
- What we take to be evil is not evil
- There is no logical inconsistency between God's existence and evil's existence.
- Theodicy - God is justified in allowing evil
- The Greater Good Argument - Irenaeus (c. 130 - c. 202 CE)
- Evil is logically necessary for good
- Evil is necessary for spiritual growth
- The Free Will Argument - Augustine (c. 354 - 430 CE)
