Immanence
In the Philosophy of Religion, ‘immanence’ is the term
used to describe the degree to which God is
related to and interacts with the universe.
The opposite of transcendence.
If we consider the four typical definitions of ‘god’ we find a continuum of immanence/transcendence:
- Deism - God is totally distinct from the universe, no interaction
- Theism - God is distinct from the universe, but occasionally interacts to alter the course of history
- Panentheism - the universe is part of god, but there is a part of God beyond the universe
- Pantheism - God and the universe are identical
