of Normative Ethics
which maintains that the good is equivalent
to whatever creates the greatest amount of happiness for the greatest number of people.
There are two distinct branches of Utilitarianism:
- Act Utilitarianism - we should perform actions which adhere to the utilitarian principle, and
- Rule Utilitarianism - we should act on rules that adhere to the utilitarian principle.
